Gather Your Wits about Gathered Swags
Workroom Tour, part 4. In May we took a virtual workroom tour of the process of forming pleated swags. This month, we'll see how the process differs for gathered swags.
A Sewing Machine Begins what hands and eyes complete. A Gathering Foot attachment on the sewing machine allows us to pre-gather the unformed swag. Mounting takes place directly on the swag board.
Measure first with the eye and second with the tape. Rulers and measuring tapes come in handy, but the SV Artisan's eye makes the first judgment of proportions and countless other judgments along the way. This holds especially true in the case of a casually elegant product like a gathered swag.
"Put your worst person on it." So said one SV customer, who wanted an extra-sloppy look for his swags. Well, we don't have any "worst" artisans around here, but we can do sloppy, or any look you have in mind. As a starting point, however, we work six fairly neat folds into our gathered swags. Notice, though, that the folds still appear pleasantly bunched up and informal near the top of the board.
