August 1st, 2005 From Dolls' Clothes to SV Romans Workroom Tour, part 6. Susan Rumsey can't remember the time before she sat at her mother's side in front of the family sewing machine, watching for scraps she could sew into dolls' clothes. Today the talented SV Shade artisan makes Roman Shades and other shade products, and continues the tradition of sewing artisanship passed down to her. |

| Shade Artisan Susan Rumsey demonstrates what she has done since she can't remember when. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Fabric placement always plays a role with print fabrics. Susan carefully aligns the fabric to the areas that will become the top, left and right edges of the finished shade. Susan starts by aligning a grouping of people in this toile fabric in what will become the center of the finished shade, and then adjusting slightly to avoid cutting anyone off on the left and right edges. |

| Brass rings go on the back of the shade to accomodate the guide strings. At the bottom of the shade Susan spot-tacks a brass ring into the bottom hem to align with each guide string. The brass ring bears the weight of the shade when raised and lowered. A solid metal bar goes in a pocket in the bottom hem to help the shade to lower properly. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Susan acheives straight and regular folds by first placing the shade on a stand and working in the folds by hand. Then she presses each fold in place with an iron. These techniques give the folds the "memory" they need to fall neatly into place each time your valuable client raises or lowers her Stevenson Vestal custom Flat Roman Shade. To learn more, see our Flat Roman Shade drawing and specs. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| What about the Rollease? In September look for the SV e-news feature article to follow along as Susan installs the Rollease shade lift mechanism on this same Flat Roman Shade. In the meantime, take a look at our Rollease drawing and specs. | ![]() |
