| Your Success Hinges On It |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Hinged Bay Cornices After many years of trials and tribulations, we've come up with a better mousetraperbay cornice. At Stevenson Vestal, although we'll build a bay board treatment any way you specify, our hinged cornices will deliver the success that often proves elusive with a fixed bay product. Make sure to request a hinged bay cornice to maximize your chances for a trouble-free project and a happy client. Read on to learn the details about this important topic. ![]() SV Turnkey Project Manager Christine stands proudly in front of a five-sided bay cornice for which she provided the measurements. Give me some "give" A Stevenson Vestal hinged bay cornice offers several advantages over a fixed bay cornice. Hinging allows the product to fold up neatly for transportation and delivery into your client's home. Perhaps most importantly, the hinge on the face of the separate boards gives the product flexibility. This extra "give" in the cornice acts as your extra insurance for an excellent fit. The cornice will fold inward as intended by the hinging to adjust to a slightly narrower than expected opening. It will also flex outward much more easily than a fixed board to spread into a wider space. We make our hinged bay cornice as three completely finished pieces hinged together on the back of the face boards. It will look great without any fussing as soon as your installer lifts it into place in your client's bay window. Let's start at the very beginning It all starts with an accurate professional measurement. Make sure your installer provides you with bay angles and back-of-board widths for the left, center and right of the bay. Let you work order read something like this: Inside job For products that must fit into a five-sided space such as the cornice pictured above, we also require the angle and width measurements for the fourth and fifth sides as well as the exact opening width straight across the front. This measurement guarantees a good fit in a situation that amounts to an inside mount. Tell us something like: Watching the returns You'll also want to pay extra attention to the returns for all bay board treatments. Notice the forward-facing returns in the photo above. Other options exist for bay board returns. Make sure to send a simple top view sketch to guarantee the shape and orientation you want for your bay returns. Who, ME? But my measurements are perfect! Why, you might ask, should I hinge a cornice when I can provide perfect measurements? Because walls will often bow slightly or have other unmeasurable irregularities. Our own SVI Installers often find that a hinged cornice will fit where a fixed cornice would have proven extremely difficult or impossible to install. |
