april 2007 eye-catcher honors patera home
Spring has sprung with flower-shaped cornices
A circular monogram forms the stunning centerpiece of a unique cornice with a crisp whimsical theme. Designer Jennifer Parker chose a round motif from a fabric as inspiration for turning two cornices into a pair of stylized flowers! The photo below shows one of two cornices destined for the bedroom of a lucky third grade girl named Katerina.

Congratulations to Patera Home
Congratulations to designer Jennifer Parker of Patera Home, LLC in Reston, VA for catching our eye this month. Jennifer eagerly anticipates the installation of these cornices and other SV products for Katerina's bedroom, including a Daybed Coverlet and a Bed Canopy. "I hope they'll be as thrilled with the installed design as I was in doing the work for them", Jennifer says. "It's because of the confidence I have in Stevenson Vestal that I was able to take such a creative approach toward this project."

Katerina, the real star
Jennifer calls young Katerina "the inspiration for the room, the real star; with her love of color and art, she was the driving force behind the bright (she's very smart!!) and happy palette." Furthermore, Jennifer adds, "she's a star soccer player so the circle motif was a great reference to her award-winning skills with a soccer ball in addition to being a great design motif with which to work."

Dot's a great idea
Jennifer describes her conceptual process for this design: "I based this cornice on a pattern of a fabric that will also go in this room. This particular fabric has a dark pink dot with a light pink ring around it. Once had I sketched out the graphic elements for the blossom and leaves based on whole, half and quarter circles all of the same radius, the design came together. I especially wanted to add some interest to the negative space on the wall above the treatments by creating the shaped profile along the top."

Every annotated picture tells a story
Designer Jennifer Parker supplied a colorful and detailed workroom reference drawing, carefully scaled and annotated. Jennifer complimented the SV artisans' realization of her vision by saying: "You can see how accurately my concept was interpreted. The only change was made by the client requesting that I increase the size of the monogram from 9” in diameter to 12”."

"Can do" people
"My favorite kind of people to work with are 'can do' people." reports Jennifer. "That's very important to me. My CSR, Paul is fantastic, and when I presented him with this novel design, he needed some time to study it." Paul called Jennifer back and said "We've just had our daily workroom consultation meeting and about your cornice: we can do it!"

SV cornice artisan Rebecca succeeds with patience
Cornice artisan Rebecca modestly describes working on this cornice: "It wasn't very hard, just time consuming. The greatest challenge was keeping the bands even." Rebecca sums up her experience: "It took a lot of patience."

SV wood shop craftsman Mike built the board for Rebecca to cover. Mike adds that he questioned the radius measurement for the curves. Once Jennifer had confirmed this important specification through communications facilitated by SV CSR Paul, Mike knew just what to do to reproduce the shape from the drawing.
