Designer Cindy Brunderman conspires with her client to creat a custom quilt out of husband's tee shirts
Designer Cindy Brunderman of By Design Interiors in Springfield, VA designed a custom quilt out of sports and school tee shirts that will have a very special meaning for her client's husband. The newly created quilt will take its place in the husband's "Man Land" room, draped over the tufted leather couch across from the large screen TV and surrounded by plenty of guy paraphernalia.

"Honey, where's that box of my favorite tee shirts?"
Cindy Brunderman describes how this interesting project got started: "My client, a dentist and her attorney husband planned a large renovation which involved moving out of their home for a month. She contacted me with the request to make a quilt out of her husband's tee shirts. Since everything needed packing up, the husband didn't notice that all his favorite tee shirts depicting his school and sports interests mysteriously took a trip to Stevenson Vestal, undergoing quite a transition before their return."

You and I have memories...
Cindy goes on: "This couple met back in high school, so they have shared memories going back a long way about schools and sports and activities together. My client assured me that each shirt she sent along for the quilt had a fond memory attached." In the photo of the finished quilt above you can see just a few of those memories, including Swim Team, Weight Lifting Team and Graduation Party.

A cherished keepsake begins as a pile of old shirts
The photo above shows what the tee shirts looked like when they arrived at Stevenson Vestal.

Square it up
SV bedding artisan Marlece places a pattern over a shirt and lines up her square.

What goes where?
A lot of time went into the exact placement of tee shirt squares. The SV artisans distributed the most colorful squares in a checker board pattern.

Hand-guided quilting
Marlece begins the hand-guided quilting process.

Go team! Meet the Artisans: Marian C. and Marlece
SV artisans Marian C. (left in photo) and Marlece (right) collaborated to create this quilt. Marian had a lot of input in the planning stages and worked hard to stabilize the tee shirt material with a backing stiffener fabric. The two worked together to determine the final placement of the field of squares. Experienced bedspread artisan Marlece carried out much of the fabrication including the hand-guided quilting.

Meet the collaborator in communications, CSR: Donna
SV Customer Service Representative Donna fielded the early questions and smoothed the way for this custom project. By the way, kudos to Donna for the great pics she took of the work in process as featured in the 5 large photos above.

Cindy sums up the SV experience
Cindy Brunderman says she has always enjoyed working with her CSR, Donna, and that in this instance she appreciated Donna's willingness to work with the unusual request of the client. Cindy calls this project a "quick collaborative effort," and says "This quilt looks so fabulous, I have no doubt my client and her husband will enjoy it for years to come." Congratulations again to Cindy Brunderman and By Design Interiors of Springfield, VA!
