| Everyone On the Bus, We're Going to Stevenson Vestal |
Seeing Ourselves Through the Eyes of Third Graders. One recent morning our adopted classroom from E. M. Holt Elementary arrived at SV for a tour of our workroom. We got as big a kick out of the visit as the kids did. "I thought I saw an Artisan...I did, I DID!" Eager student Terrance (right) waves with anticipation as the bus pulls up to SV at 9 AM, sharp.

"Do it again, do it again." After a warm welcome we broke up into small groups, and SV volunteers lead each group through the workroom. The one group in most of these photos included teacher Debra (left) and students (left to right) Landon, Tyler, Cyera, Lauren and Emma. Here you see the group watching as SV drapery cutter Herman uses the cutting machine, which zzzzzziiips across the fabric in an apparently highly exciting fashion. |
Aggravated? Who, me? SV swag artisan Diane had the group transfixed as she showed them some basic stitches. Then, whoops!a thread broke. One of the kids piped up "Do you every get aggravated?" Diane quickly quipped, "Honey, you don't even know." |
Please may I have a ball tassel? Lauren, Emma and Cyera pal around as they watch swag artisan Deborah hand-sewing some ball tassel fringe to a swag. All the kids wanted some kind of scrap for a souvenir. Unfortunately, Deborah had no extra ball tassels to offer up. |
What, YOU have to read books, too? SV valance artisan Liz shows the group a picture of the Victory Valance she had just begun. Each SV valance artisan has their own book of reference drawings and fabrication notes. |
Meet Me at the Corner. SV valance artisan Elaina shows Tyler and the group a customer sketch that helped her create this custom valance for a corner window. The young students learned an important lesson about custom window treatments: A picture, even a simple sketch of a few lines, paints a thousand words. |
Is PINK "in" this year? Tyler and Landon inspect a Bronson Topper out of pink fabric while SV valance artisan Becky tries to field their many questions. "What IS it?" "Why does it have those straps?" "What's that tube thing doing down there?" |
Who, what, why and welt. With questions flying back and forth ("Why is that pillow so BIG?"), SV accessories artisan Trudy demonstrates her skills at sewing a large cushion, including making up a nice running length of fabric-covered welt. The children's eyes lit up when Trudy wrapped a bias cut of plaid around some large cotton cord and magically that pleasing smooth round shape appeared. But Landon, turning to his teacher, wanted an update on the pending snack time. Hang in there, Landonalmost there! |
Wake up and Smell the Woodshop. SV woodshop builders Rodney (in back) and Mike (cleverly hiding out of frame to the right) showed the young academics their bright and clean and excellent-smelling domain. |
Head Wounds Not Included. In the end the whole class got a great tour, had some tasty snacks, and took home some valuable selvages and odd scraps. Despite their appearances in this photo, none of the boys suffered from any life-threatening head wounds, but simply found the coolest way ever to wear their souvenir scraps home.
Epilogue: Smile and the Grown-up World Smiles With You. If you could have walked along with us that day in the SV workroom you would have seen happy faces and bright smiles and heard joyful laughter all coming from the young at heart here at Stevenson Vestal. The kids had fun, too. Sometimes we just need to see ourselves in the eyes of an innocent child to realize that we get to do fun, interesting and important tasks that lead to beautiful and meaningful results. |
