Anchored By Symmetry

Framing the Room: The Role of Tailored Valances

In a space defined by symmetry, every element contributes to the overall structure.

This living room demonstrates how tailored Seaforth Valances establish balance and proportion—bringing a clean, finished edge to each window while reinforcing the room’s architectural framework. Positioned on either side of the fireplace, the valances create visual consistency and strengthen the central axis, allowing the space to read as intentional and well-resolved.

As designer Lauren Maroney shared, “The valances turned out so beautiful, my client LOVES them!!”

Designer: Lauren Maroney, Ethan Allen, Sterling, VA

Subtle Fabric, Defined Presence

The selected fabric introduces a soft, textural pattern within a restrained palette. Rather than drawing focus, it supports the overall design—adding depth while maintaining a calm, cohesive environment.

Valances are particularly effective in spaces where control and restraint are key. They provide a tailored top treatment that completes the window while allowing natural light to remain a primary feature. For designers, this approach offers a way to refine the opening without introducing unnecessary volume.

Precision in Proportion

Though visually minimal, valances rely on exact proportion to feel correct within the space.

Height, length, and return depth are carefully considered in relation to window scale, ceiling height, and surrounding millwork. In this installation, each valance is positioned to sit comfortably above the window casing—creating a clean transition that integrates with the architecture rather than appearing applied.

This level of proportion is what allows the treatment to feel subtle, yet fully resolved.

Craftsmanship Behind the Valance

Achieving this level of simplicity requires disciplined fabrication.

Each valance is constructed using a structured board to ensure a crisp, consistent profile. The fabric is applied with controlled tension to maintain a smooth, tailored surface, free from distortion or irregularity.

Pattern placement is aligned across both windows to maintain visual continuity, even within a subtle texture. Returns are precisely measured and executed to wrap cleanly to the wall, eliminating gaps and reinforcing a finished, architectural appearance.

These details are not immediately visible—but they are essential to how the installation is perceived.

Supporting the Designer’s Vision

For the designer, the objective is clarity and control.

These valances provide a structured framework that reinforces the room’s symmetry while allowing other elements—furnishings, artwork, and materials—to remain the focal point. Custom fabrication ensures that each component is executed as intended, minimizing installation variables and delivering a consistent, predictable result.

The outcome is a window treatment that supports the design without competing with it.

Where Design Is Realized Through Fabrication

Valances may appear understated, but their success is defined by proportion, structure, and precision in execution.

When fabricated with care, they become an integral architectural element—bringing clarity, balance, and a finished quality to the space.

At Stevenson Vestal, each valance is fabricated to support the designer’s vision with consistency, accuracy, and attention to detail.
