Custom Cornice with Sculpted Profile

Architectural Shape, Tailored to the Room

A custom cornice has the ability to define the architecture of a window wall—especially when the silhouette itself becomes part of the design language. In this project, the designer specified a long, continuous cornice with a sculpted, undulating lower edge that introduces movement while maintaining a strong horizontal presence across the span.

At nearly 79 inches wide, this treatment was designed to frame the window with intention. The shaped profile adds softness without losing structure, creating a balance between tailored construction and decorative detail.

Fabric That Carries the Design

The selected fabric features a richly detailed botanical pattern set against a deep ground. With a motif of this scale and complexity, the cornice becomes more than a frame—it becomes a focal architectural element within the room.

This kind of fabric invites precision. The visual weight of the pattern means that any misalignment would immediately disrupt the balance of the treatment. Instead, the finished cornice reads as cohesive and deliberate, allowing the pattern to enhance the form rather than compete with it.

Precision in the Workroom

Projects like this begin long before fabrication. The provided drawings outlined not only the overall width and height, but also the exact curvature of the shaped bottom edge. Translating that into a finished cornice requires careful planning at every stage.

The structure of the cornice had to support a smooth, continuous profile while maintaining crisp edges along the top and returns. The shaping itself demands accuracy—each curve must transition cleanly to preserve the intended rhythm across the width.

Before fabrication begins, the cornice profile is translated into a digital cutting file using our Gerber system. Based directly on the designer’s specifications, this process ensures that every curve, transition, and proportion is captured with exact accuracy.

Rather than relying on manual templating alone, the Gerber cutting system allows us to produce consistent, repeatable shapes—especially critical for a sculpted profile like this. The smoothness of each curve and the symmetry across the span are established at this stage, creating a precise foundation for the upholstered finish.

This level of accuracy supports everything that follows—from pattern placement to final installation. When the structure is exact, the fabrication can remain disciplined, and the finished treatment installs cleanly with the intended shape fully intact.

Craftsmanship Behind the Pattern

One of the most critical decisions in this project was pattern placement.

Rather than treating the fabric as a simple covering, the pattern was carefully centered and distributed across the face of the cornice. Key motifs were positioned to align with the high and low points of the curve, ensuring the design feels balanced across the entire span.

Seam placement was also thoughtfully considered to remain as unobtrusive as possible. This level of planning ensures that the eye reads the cornice as a single, unified piece rather than a series of components.

The result is a treatment where the pattern and the structure work together—each reinforcing the other.

Supporting the Designer’s Vision

For the designer, this cornice was not just a decorative addition—it was an integral part of the room’s composition. The scale, the shaping, and the fabric all needed to work in harmony with the surrounding elements.

By approaching the project with disciplined fabrication and careful attention to proportion, the final piece installs cleanly and performs as intended. The structure holds its shape, the pattern reads clearly, and the treatment delivers the architectural presence the design called for.

This is where custom fabrication makes the difference. Standard solutions cannot achieve this level of alignment between concept and execution.

It’s another way we ensure that complex custom designs are not only achievable—but executed with consistency and confidence.

Where Design Meets Fabrication

Every detail in this cornice—from the drawn profile to the final upholstery—reflects a collaborative process between designer intent and workroom execution.

At Stevenson Vestal, each project is approached with this level of care. Because thoughtful design deserves precise fabrication.
