Drapery Solutions for Bay Windows

Architectural Continuity: Drapery Solutions for Bay Windows

Bay windows present a unique design opportunity. Their angles, depth, and natural light can define a room—but they also demand careful planning when it comes to window treatments. In this project, the designer approached the bay not as a single span, but as a series of individual openings. The result is a tailored drapery solution that feels intentional, balanced, and architecturally aligned.

Designer: Holly Deluca, Shades Unlimited West, Missoula, MT

Treating the Bay as Individual Openings

Rather than running one continuous rod across the full bay, the designer specified separate panels for each window section. This decision allows each opening to read clearly within the architecture of the room, maintaining the rhythm of the millwork and preserving the proportions of the space.

In both the living and dining rooms, the drapery panels are mounted on individual rods, following the angles of the bay. The soft neutral fabric introduces light control without disrupting the visual flow, while the repetition of panels reinforces symmetry across each elevation.

This approach gives the designer greater control over how the treatment frames each window—avoiding the common issue of fabric stacking awkwardly at the corners or overwhelming the bay’s structure.

Precision in the Workroom

Executing separate panels within a bay requires disciplined fabrication. Each section must be measured independently, accounting for slight variations in wall angles, casing depth, and projection.

Pleat spacing is calculated so that each panel stacks cleanly within its own opening. Return depths are adjusted to ensure the drapery wraps back to the wall consistently, even as the angles shift. Hem lengths are carefully aligned across all sections so the eye reads a continuous baseline, despite the segmented construction.

Because the panels are viewed together, consistency becomes critical. Any variation in fullness, break, or alignment would disrupt the overall composition. This is where precise fabrication transforms a straightforward design decision into a cohesive installation.

Scaled Solutions for Secondary Windows

In the smaller openings throughout the home, the designer carried the same disciplined approach with café panels. These treatments provide privacy where needed while allowing natural light to remain a defining element of the space.

Each café panel is scaled specifically to its window rather than relying on standard proportions. Heights are set to align with the sash break, creating a clean visual transition that feels integrated with the millwork. Fullness is carefully controlled so the folds read structured and intentional, avoiding excess volume at a smaller scale.

Uniform pleat formation and spacing are essential here. Because café panels sit at eye level, inconsistencies become immediately visible. Clean seam placement, balanced distribution, and precise hem alignment ensure the panels maintain a tailored appearance across each opening.

Consistency Across the Interior

What makes this project particularly effective is the continuity between the full-length drapery and the café panels. While the applications differ, the underlying principles—proportion, alignment, and controlled fullness—remain consistent.

The bay window drapery establishes the architectural rhythm, while the café panels reinforce it in smaller moments. Together, they create a cohesive language throughout the home without competing for attention.

For interior designers, this level of coordination is where custom fabrication becomes essential. Each treatment is considered in relation to the whole, ensuring that even secondary windows contribute meaningfully to the overall design intent.

Where Design Meets Fabrication

Bay windows reward thoughtful design decisions—but they depend on precise execution to succeed. Treating each opening individually requires more planning in the workroom, but the payoff is a result that feels tailored to the architecture rather than applied to it.

Stevenson Vestal partners with interior designers to translate these decisions into finished installations. Every measurement, seam, and pleat is considered in relation to the full space—supporting both the visual outcome and the installation process.

Thoughtful design deserves precise fabrication.
