Drapery That Defines the Room

Architectural Height, Controlled: Drapery That Defines the Room

Double-height windows create opportunity—but they also demand discipline. In this seating area, the vertical scale is the defining architectural feature. The Top Tacked Two Prong Drapery isn’t just functional; it’s responsible for organizing the entire wall plane and reinforcing the room’s proportions.

Designer: Peter Makris, Jacksonville Shade and Drapery, Jacksonville, FL

Modern living room with high ceiling, large windows, custom drapery, round chandelier, white chairs around a coffee table, and outdoor view.

Letting Height Work for the Design

The full-height panels extend from ceiling to floor, visually anchoring the upper and lower windows into a single composition. Instead of treating the transom and doors separately, the drapery establishes continuity—drawing the eye upward while maintaining balance at the seating level.

The neutral fabric selection allows the structure of the treatment to do the work. There’s no visual interruption—just a clean, uninterrupted drop that reinforces the ceiling height and the rhythm of the beams above.

Precision in the Workroom

Treatments at this scale leave no room for inconsistency.

Panel widths must be calculated to maintain proper fullness across the entire span—especially critical when the stack height needs to remain controlled without overwhelming the wall. Pleat spacing is disciplined and consistent, ensuring the folds hang straight over the full vertical drop.

Equally important is weight distribution. Long panels require careful consideration of fabric weight, heading construction, and hardware support to ensure the drapery hangs cleanly from top to bottom without torque or drift over time.

The return and leading edge alignment are also intentional—allowing the panels to frame the glass cleanly while maintaining a tailored edge when viewed from multiple angles in the room.

Why This Matters for Designers

When working with double-height spaces, proportion can quickly fall apart without precise fabrication. Treatments that are even slightly off in fullness, alignment, or structure become immediately noticeable at this scale.

Custom fabrication allows you to control how the window is experienced:

The height feels intentional, not overwhelming,The panels stack cleanly without crowding the opening,The folds maintain structure from ceiling to floor,The installation reads as architectural, not decorative

This is where disciplined workroom execution directly supports the design vision.

Where Design Meets Fabrication

Every decision—from panel width to pleat spacing to hardware support—is made to ensure the treatment performs at full height. The result is a window that feels resolved, balanced, and integrated into the architecture of the space.

Thoughtful design deserves precise fabrication.
