Frame the Room with Intention

Drapery and Valances That Frame the Room with Intention

In both the living and dining spaces, these window treatments demonstrate how disciplined fabrication brings clarity and structure to a design. Drapery panels and tailored valances are used differently, yet they work together to create a cohesive architectural story—one that reinforces proportion, alignment, and flow throughout the home.

Designer Janet Davis shared with us, "I think the valances are my favorite. Everything is beautiful.

Architectural Framing Through Drapery

In the living room, full-length drapery panels establish a strong vertical framework across multiple openings. The fabric introduces a quiet pattern that reads consistently from panel to panel, supporting the room without competing for attention.

Each rod is aligned to maintain a continuous sightline, allowing the eye to travel uninterrupted across the wall. Beneath the panels, woven shades provide functional light control while preserving a clean, layered appearance. The result is a balanced elevation where softness and structure coexist.

A Deliberate Approach to Valance Design

In the dining room, the design shifts to tailored valances—scaled to the architecture of the bay window. Rather than fabricating a single continuous valance across all three windows, the designer intentionally specified three separate units.

This decision allows each window to maintain its own proportion while still reading as a unified composition. It also respects the subtle changes in wall angle across the bay, preventing distortion that can occur when a single continuous treatment is forced across multiple planes.

When executed correctly, separate valances create a rhythm across the windows—structured, consistent, and architecturally aware.

Fabric That Carries Across the Space

The floral fabric introduces movement and softness, but its success depends on controlled placement. Each valance is carefully proportioned so the pattern feels centered and balanced within its individual frame, while still relating to the adjacent windows.

A contrast band defines the lower edge, adding structure and a clear visual endpoint. This detail reinforces the tailored nature of the treatment and provides consistency across all three units.

Precision in the Workroom

Fabricating both the drapery and valances requires careful planning before any cutting begins.

For the drapery panels, pleat spacing and fullness are calculated to ensure consistent hang and clean returns. Across multiple windows, alignment is critical—any variation would interrupt the visual continuity of the wall.

For the valances, the decision to produce three separate pieces introduces additional complexity. Each unit must be fabricated to identical height, curve, and proportion so they align visually once installed. Pattern placement is controlled within each valance, and seam positioning is adjusted to avoid disrupting the design at the edges.

The contrast banding requires precise application to maintain a straight, even line across all three windows—even as the wall angles shift.

Craftsmanship That Supports the Design

Details like these are what allow the finished installation to feel resolved. The valances maintain their structure, the patterns remain balanced, and the drapery panels stack and return cleanly.

This level of control ensures the treatments perform not only visually, but also functionally over time.

Supporting the Designer’s Vision

For interior designers, decisions like specifying separate valances instead of a single continuous treatment are about control—of proportion, alignment, and architectural clarity. When paired with disciplined fabrication, those decisions translate into installations that feel intentional and complete.

Stevenson Vestal works alongside designers to ensure every detail—from pleat spacing to pattern placement—is executed with precision, supporting the original vision from concept through installation.

Thoughtful design deserves precise fabrication.

If your next project calls for tailored drapery or custom valances, we’re here to help bring that vision into focus with reliable, workroom-driven execution.
