Guarantee Your Quote When Choosing Delicate Fabrics or Wide Trims

Guarantee your quote when choosing delicate fabrics or wide trim by sending photos (or links to online images) of all materials.

Watch our latest video as Dave and Tammy go over these fabrics and trims.

We love all of the different types of fabrics and trims we get to work with for your projects! However, there are three types of delicate fabrics do not pair well with our sewing machines and require hand-sewn hems. And we also have an issue with most flat trims, which are too wide to sew down just one side.

And yes, if we find that the hems do not need to be hand-sewn, we will remove the hand sewing charges.

Velvet

Velvet fabrics will need the bottom and side hems hand sewn on draperies and bedding products to prevent scarring of the fabric on the front side of the products.

Our artisans will test a small section of the fabric before deciding how to proceed and you personal customer service representative will contact if we need to hand sew any of the hems.

NOTE: All unlined velvet dust ruffles will always need the bottom hems hand sewn to prevent scarring of the fabric on the front side. Also, we are unable to quilt velvet fabrics.

Open weave fabrics

Some open weave fabrics must have hand-sewn bottom and side hems. Otherwise, they will snag in the machine and get torn.

The more loose and open the weave, the greater chance that the machine will not feed the fabric through, and the fabric will tear. However, some of the tighter of the open weaves will feed through the machine without harming the fabric.

This points out the necessity of having a photo ahead of time for the quote. In that way we can give you an accurate quote.

But rest assured that we can also remove a charge if we did not need to hand-sew the hems.

Sequin Fabrics

Fabrics with sequins are other fabrics that sometimes requires the hems to be hand sewn.

There are a few types of this fabric as well. There are fabrics with flat sequins that are somewhat soft and will feed through the machine just fine. Then there are some sequin fabrics that have raised and lose sequins and some that are raised and tend to filp over like fish scales.

Also some sequins are made of metal and can damage the machine and in turn damage the fabric. Therefore handsewing is required.

The additional attention to detail required for a hand-sewn drapery or bedding product makes for a beautiful finished touch.

The wide variety of decorative trims offers a world of choices to create a luxurious and richly designed custom drapery, shade, or valance.

Most flat trims less than 1/2" will be just fine sewing one time, however the wider trims will need to be sewn down both sides to prevent the trim from being floppy on one side.

Trims Over 1/2"

Flat trim, sometimes called Grosgrain trim, typically measures between 1" and 4" wide, but you can find trim even larger than that.

Trim with pom-poms, beads, tassels or fringe typically hang from a decorative lip.

Depending on the style of the trim and the look you're going for, we can sew the trim on by one of two ways...

1) We can machine sew the trim into the seam of the product, so that the decorative lip does not show.

2) If the lip of the trim is so decorative you don't want to hide it, and you'd prefer the decorative lip to remain visible along with the pom-poms, beads, tassels or fringe we can sew on top of the face fabric by machine or by hand.

Just be sure to specify with your order exactly how and where you would like your trim applied to your product!
