Tailored Window Treatments

Architectural Layering: Seaforth Valance with Inverted Box Pleat Draperies

Large windows introduce natural light, expansive views, and a strong architectural presence within a space. Designing window treatments for windows of this scale requires a careful balance — preserving openness while introducing softness, proportion, and structure.

In this project, a custom Seaforth Valance paired with Inverted Box Pleated Draperies demonstrates how tailored window treatments can frame the architecture of a room without competing with the view beyond.

Soft neutral fabrics were selected to complement the warm tones of the interior while introducing subtle texture and depth. The result is a layered composition that quietly enhances the space, allowing the architecture and natural light to remain the focal point.

Thoughtful window treatments do more than dress a window — they shape how the room feels and how the architecture is experienced. Designer Oxana Sinigur shares that "Everything was completed beautifully."

Design Insight

In rooms with expansive windows, combining structured top treatments with tailored draperies allows designers to introduce softness and proportion while preserving the view. The Seaforth valance establishes architectural definition, while inverted box pleat draperies add vertical rhythm and visual balance.

Custom fabrication ensures both treatments work together seamlessly within the scale of the space.

Framing the Window with a Seaforth Valance

The Seaforth Valance provides the architectural top layer of the window treatment. Its clean, tailored profile introduces structure while softening the strong horizontal line of the window frame.

In this installation, the valance establishes a visual anchor across the upper portion of the window. This horizontal definition helps organize the scale of the window while maintaining the openness of the glass below.

The fabric’s gently flowing pattern adds subtle movement across the face of the valance, creating visual interest without overwhelming the neutral palette of the room. This restrained texture allows the treatment to feel refined and intentional rather than decorative.

Valances like this are often used to complete a layered window composition. By defining the upper boundary of the treatment, they allow draperies and shades to integrate seamlessly into the architecture of the space.

Draperies That Add Height and Softness

In the adjacent room, Inverted Box Pleated Drapery panels introduce vertical rhythm and tailored elegance.

This pleat style creates a clean, structured appearance that works especially well in contemporary and transitional interiors. The pleats form crisp vertical folds that allow the fabric to fall evenly from the track, giving the panels a refined and disciplined silhouette.

For rooms with tall windows and expansive views, draperies serve an important architectural role. They soften the edges of the window opening while visually extending the height of the space, balancing the strong horizontal lines of the window itself.

The neutral fabric keeps the treatment understated so the surrounding architecture and exterior skyline remain the focal point. Instead of competing with the view, the draperies quietly frame it.

Precision in the Workroom

Although the finished installation appears effortless, achieving this level of balance requires disciplined craftsmanship in the workroom.

For the seaforth valance, careful pattern centering ensures the flowing design reads balanced across the width of the treatment. Seam placement is planned intentionally so the pattern remains consistent and uninterrupted across the face of the valance.

Structural construction is equally important. The internal framework must maintain the valance’s tailored shape while supporting the fabric evenly across the window.

For the draperies, inverted box pleats require precise spacing and consistent fold depth so each pleat aligns perfectly along the header. This disciplined construction allows the panels to hang evenly and maintain their structure over time.

These fabrication decisions are rarely visible to the eye, yet they are what allow the finished treatment to appear balanced, intentional, and professionally executed.

Precision fabrication transforms beautiful fabric into architectural design elements.

Supporting the Designer’s Vision

Interior designers often use layered window treatments to shape the architectural character of a space. Combining a structured valance with tailored draperies allows designers to control proportion, introduce texture, and frame expansive windows while maintaining natural light.

At Stevenson Vestal, our role is to translate that vision into a finished installation through disciplined fabrication and careful planning.

Every project is custom fabricated to suit the scale of the window, the chosen fabric, and the designer’s overall concept for the space. By approaching each treatment with precision and craftsmanship, we help ensure the designer’s intent carries through to the final installation.

The result is a window treatment that feels integrated with the architecture of the room rather than simply placed upon it.

Thoughtful design deserves precise fabrication.

Fabrication Details

Every Stevenson Vestal window treatment is fabricated to suit the specific scale and architecture of the space.

For this project, key fabrication considerations included:

• Pattern centering across the Seaforth valance
• Seam placement to maintain pattern flow
• Consistent pleat spacing in the inverted box pleat draperies
• Structural support within the valance to maintain its tailored profile
• Fabrication proportions that complement the window’s architectural scale

These details ensure the finished treatments install cleanly and maintain their structure over time.
