Cornice boards are layered with soft foam and upholstered with your choice of fabric.
Cornices also finish with board legs, which can make them a bit harder to squeeze into tighter spaces during your install.
Keep in mind that some valances can have a similar pattern to cornices, but again, the difference lies in the upholstery process.
Shade toppers, or faux Roman Shades, are very similar to valances.
Toppers give the appearance of a working Roman Shade without functioning like one.
